Online Gender-Based Violence and Harassment (GBVH) refers to harmful behaviors and actions directed at individuals based on their gender or gender identity in a digital environment. This type of violence can manifest on various online platforms, including social media, forums, messaging apps, and other digital communication channels. It is increasingly affecting professional environments as remote work and digital communication become a standard part of work life.
Many employees experience various forms of online harassment daily, which negatively impacts not only their mental well-being but also the overall workplace atmosphere, employee satisfaction, and organizational productivity. Online GBVH can take many forms, including cyberstalking, doxxing, online sexual harassment, hate speech, trolling, image abuse, identity theft, and technology-facilitated control.
As part of our research on this issue, we conducted a survey among 118 respondents from eastern Slovakia to provide a comprehensive perspective on this problem, identify the key challenges employees face, and explore possible solutions for addressing it in the workplace. This report offers an analysis of the current state of online harassment, its impact on work environments, and recommendations for effective measures to combat it.
The report was created with the support of the Center for International Private Enterprise as part of the “Women in Tech” project.
